How a Basket is made
The making weaving of a basket is a long practiced art of the Amish community. The Amish sit for hours cutting, nailing, sawing and weaving the baskets. The first step is to have a bottom base usually made of plywood. Up splints are nailed onto the plywood about 1″ apart depending on the type of basket that is being made. The Hinged Roof woven birdhouse has an all plywood interior. The up splints are made from poplar, oak, or hickory and are about 3/16″ thick. Reed is soaked in water to make it pliable.
The basket is started by interlacing the reed if front and then behind the up splints until the journey is completed around the entire basket. The next row of reed is started opposite of the first row front and back of each up splint. This continues all the way to the top of the basket. Lids are cut to fit the top of the woven baskets and the hinger roof woven birdhouse. A piece of half round reed is mounted around the lid and a wood knob is centered and also mounted foe easy on and off movement. Baskets are dipped in food safe stain and left to drip dry. Customers should leave the baskets in a breezy area for about a week to let them air out.
